The comparison between building a church next to Auschwitz and this mosque was wrong, but not for the reason that Chuck complained about. The Holocaust may have been aided by a history of church antisemitism, but it in no was was a fulfillment of any religious imperative. It was out of an ideology with roots in pseudoscience and paganism. 9/11, OTOH, was explicitly carried out in the name of jihad. That makes this mosque worse than building a church next to Auschwitz.

Not a church, but the Carmelite order did place a convent at Auschwitz, until the Pope pressured them to leave.
Jews objected to the presence of the convent – and various crosses that have been placed there – because they saw it as at attempt to de-Judaicise the Holocaust.
There was no question that the Nazi flag would fly there, or that a German or Polish white supremacist group would put up a cultural center.
The equivalent to a mosque at Ground Zero at Auschwitz would be to fly a German flag – after all, not all Germans were Nazis. It would give much satisfaction to Nazis worldwide (especially in Arabia) to see that flag waving over the corpses of million Jews.
The Wally is so intent on not generalizing the enemy to all Muslims, that he would be happy to give satisfaction to the millions of Islamists who would see the mosque as a symbol of triumph over Dar el Harb.
Whose feelings trump the issue here? Those of the so-called moderate Muslims who do not like being thought of as Islamists? The Islamists who want to gloat? Or the victims?
Would it not be a good thing if the Islamic equivalent of the Pope (no such being, of course) could order the mosque to be built elsewhere?
