Van Jones on the Sherrod Debacle

Opinion | Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 12:15:37 am PDT

Obama’s former “green jobs” adviser Van Jones (another person who was forced to resign after a dishonest right wing smear campaign) has an op-ed in the New York Times about the zero-sum politics of personal destruction: Shirley Sherrod and Me.

UNDERSTAND how Shirley Sherrod, the Agriculture Department official who was forced to resign last week, must have felt.

Last year I, too, resigned from an administration job, after I uttered some ill-chosen words about the Republican Party and was accused — falsely — of signing my name to a petition being passed around by 9/11 conspiracy theorists. Partisan Web sites and pundits pounced, and I, too, saw my name go from obscurity to national infamy within hours.

Our situations aren’t exactly the same. Ms. Sherrod’s comments, in which she, a black woman, appeared to admit to racial discrimination against a white couple, were taken far out of context, while I truly did use a vulgarity.

But the way we were treated is strikingly similar, and it reveals a lot about the venal nature of Washington politics in the Internet era. In my case, the media rushed to judgment so quickly that I was never able to make clear that the group put my name on its Web site without my permission. The group finally admitted that it never had my signature, but by then it was too late.

Fortunately, Ms. Sherrod has been offered a new job. But our stories offer cautionary tales to anyone interested in taking a job in national politics.

The crazy smearing of Van Jones was one of several major breaking points between LGF and the entire rest of the right wing blogosphere; I refused to jump on this bandwagon, and did my best to point out that Jones was being railroaded — and received a deluge of hate mail and attacks from wingnut bloggers as a result. They were in full-out lynch mode and didn’t want to hear anything that might put a crimp in their hate buzz.

And it should be noted that the person behind this dishonest hatchet job on Van Jones, who Googled up Jones’s name on a 9/11 Truther petition (and then ignored all evidence that the signature was added without his knowledge) was none other than religious fanatic Jim Hoft.

On Wikipedia, there is still a gaping hole where a Christianophobia page (as opposed to the current patronizing and loathsome “anti-Chrisian sentiment” page) should be located…

But if you even quote the following rather mainstream exegetical opinions by classical fuquha (Shari’a jurists)…

“Who relinquishes his faith, kill him.”– ibn Hazm, “The Sweetened” (al-Muhalla), pp. 129 and 401, part 8 Vol. 11

“Who relinquishes his faith, kill him.”– Ibn Hisham, al-Rawd al-Anaf, p. 284, part 3

“Who relinquishes his faith, kill him.”– ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, Zad al-Ma’ad, p. 45, part 5

I lived in the Bay Area for years. Jones was active all through the 90′s as a far left commie activist with “CopWatch”…he was really popular with the KPFK lefty radio crowd.

And as for Jim Hoft, when does being a mainstream Catholic qualify as “religious fanatic”?

    Chucky is a whack job.

MLP – who else do you think he is? E.g. Jimmah, and …?

One of these days I’m going to try running some LGF post data through a neural net just to see if any interesting patterns emerge (not that I care if CJ’s gone full Norman Bates blog mode, just that neural nets are fun, and I’ve gotten author ID like this to work before, albeit with a larger sample size than a typical blog post.)

        July 28, 2010 at 10:28 am | #21

Something I’ve wanted to try is some writing analysis. I did a spot check a while back, and it concluded that the current “Charles” isn’t the same person as the “Charles” of yesteryear, but it was only four samples. I think a serious study with a few dozen samples would provide robust evidence one way or the other. But my gut reaction to reading this stuff now compared to the past is that it’s someone else.

Part of the problem with such a study is that while “he” writes rambling essays now, in the past, “he” would only add a sentence or two to a link. It’s hard to find any meat in any of the older posts.

I wondered if that’s what you meant – that the current ‘CJ’ is not the same as the CJ of years past (vs. meaning that the current CJ is also several sockpuppet posters on his own blog). Interesting proposition, potentially amenable to the same analysis though you’re right, the historical CJ didn’t post much at all unlike the current incarnation.

also, it looks as though this is Chucky’s MO for starting another publicity seeking blog war. Notice he writes article after article where he attacks one person/site, and hopes the other side responds. If not, he unleashes KKKilgore.

Also, As for Van Jones, IIRC, Chuckles started to defend Jones, posting multiple threads defending him and attacking his critics; this was not a valiant, passive “I refuse to join” act, as he portrays almost a year later (after Chuckles had his head handed to him by people like Hoft and Ace for defending Jones).

Yes, Little Ponytail. Mugabe is a communist bastard. His only real friend in the world is Kim Jong-Il. The Norks trained his infamous “5th Brigade” that massacred his tribal rivals, the Matabele, in the so called “Gukurahundi”.

The Chinese put up with him because they want access to the mineral wealth of Zimbabwe, but they were instrumental in arming him as well when his ZANU guerillas were fighting Ian Smith’s government of what was then Rhodesia.

The sad part of it is, Jimmah Cahtah and the Brits were just as responsible for him coming to power as the Chicoms and Norks. They refused to recognize the Internal Settlement coalition government of Bishop Abel Muzorewa and Ian Smith that would have paved the way for a transition from white minority rule but still maintained a free market economy. They insisted ZANU were to be allowed to participate in elections and ZANU thugged their way to power with voter intimidation in the Tribal Trust Lands. Thus, the breadbasket of Africa became a basket case that now cannot even feed itself.

Osprey wrote, “I think Chuckles new rule is thou shalt not criticize a black person, even if they are a communist.”

Marx and Engels were open racists — this is well-documented in their own authentic personal writings…

Engels, in a letter to the wife of Paul Lafargue dated 1887 (Lafargue was running for a council seat in a Paris district which contained a zoo), wrote:

“Being in his quality as a nigger, a degree nearer to the rest of the animal kingdom than the rest of us, he is undoubtedly the most appropriate representative of that district.”

This is how Marx described socialist intellectual Ferdinand Lassalle in a letter dated to July 1862…

“It is now completely clear to me that he, as is proved by his cranial formation and his hair, descends from the Negroes from Egypt, assuming that his mother or grandmother had not interbred with a nigger. Now this union of Judaism and Germanism with a basic Negro substance must produce a peculiar product. The obtrusiveness of the fellow is also nigger-like.”

        Scientific racism…sound familiar?

Paul, I actually think the Van Jones defense is more about Johnsons personal animosity toward Glen Beck, than Van Jones being unfairly disqualified for a job. If Beck is against something, Johnsons knee jerk reaction is to be for it. CJ is a lot like a spiteful 13 year old girl. Doesnt matter if Van Jones was a blatant Mumia supporter or had ties to a Marxist revolution group on top of the 9-11 petition. The right made a case against Van Jones so CJ had to take the opposite position.
