A Mosque and an Islamic Center are not (!) private properties in the sense your home is.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is no exception because he is NOT condemning terrorism. He refuses to condemn the terror organization Hamas and he is closely affiliated with and financed by a group which was the main donor (US$ 300,000+) to the “Flotilla”-movement. Another case is that he is scanning all nations all over the world how compatible their constitutions are to sharia. Does this ring some bells ? No ?
With not a single word I denied that there are good Muslim people. I’ve clashed quite often with other members of the blogmocracy about to lump together all Muslims but I’m neither naive nor stupid.

i) At the very beginning Auschwitz had been a camp for Polish (Catholic) intellectuals and war prisoners from the Soviet Union (SU). This was camp I or “Stammlager”. No Jews involved.
ii) Even Auschwitz-Birkenau (which became the extermination camp for about 1.1 Mill. Jews) or Camp II was planned as an additional war prisoner-camp. Mostly for war prisoners from the SU.
iii) Originally both camps were not planned as extermination camps for Jews but as labor camps for war prisoners and Polish freedom fighters.
iv) At Auschwitz I and II about 400,000 Christians were killed, murdered, annihilated, gazed, tortured or starved to death.
v) The place where the nuns built their convent was a private property of the Catholic Church of Poland and outside the camp at the border to Auschwitz I “Stammlager” and it was an international center of peace.
vi) Most of the Christian victims had been murdered at Auschwitz I “Stammlager” where (outsite the camp) the convent was built.
vii) At the memorial stone is written that the victims were “mostly Jews”. It’s correct, at the end 2.5 times more Jews has been killed at Auschwitz than Christians but don’t you think they (the Christians) had their “fair share” with 400,000 victims too ? Or do you prefer to threw them under the bus ?
Before you scream at me: no, I’m NOT defending the convent and I agree with one left-wing German newspaper (“taz”) which called it the “Christianization of the Shoa”. Exactly this is what happens at Ground Zero: the “Islamization of 9/11”. To make the religion of the terrorists dominant at Ground Zero with an Islamic Center and a huge Mosque is as tasteless as to build a convent at Auschwitz since most of the Nazis were baptized but not believing Christians.
What would you tell the mayor of Munich if an Islamic “moderate” group with a close affiliation to Fateh and the PLO would like to build a Mosque in front of the place where 11 Israeli sportsmen and trainers were held captive and murdered in a massacre at the Olympics 1972. Would you oppose the Mosque as inappropriate or would you promote it for religious freedom ?
What is sickening is your argument that “the ground is to be commercially developed” and about the “building of office buildings”. This could come out directly of the mouth of an al-Kaida member. The towers were attacked explicit because of their commercial importance. Every other use than a commercially one would be a soundly victory for al-Kaida. Btw.: would you make the same argument (about the use) in cause of the Pentagon ? Yes or no ?
What you apparently can’t manage is to differ between the requests of victims and those who are affiliated with the wrong doers. If the New Yorkers decide to open an amusement park at Ground Zero it would their (the victims) decision although it would be imho inappropriate.
So, to go back again: it is appropriate to build an 11 story Mosque and Islamic Center near Ground Zero but it is not appropriate to build a convent near Auschwitz where about 400,000 Christians were murdered. Did I get this one right ?

Do you know why I think this mosque will end up making things worse for Muslims? Their call to prayer 5 times every single day. Can you imagine having to deal with that every day? There is no way that sound will not reach Ground Zero. 5 times every single day those people in and around the building will be reminded of who destroyed the WTC and the innocent people inside.

a) The property owner wanted to build a Wal-Mart;
b) If some crazed federal agency decides that there is an endangered snail on the owner’s land that needs protecting (or that it is an “essential wetland,” or something of the sort); or
c) If, just for the sake of argument, the owner wanted to put up a billboard, or a tableau, in their front yard or atop their building which expressed a political opinion with which these “defenders of the First Amendment” disagreed.
Certainly, given the number of people expressing their First Amendment rights on behalf of the Republican candidate for president during the last election who had their signs and property vandalized, it would appear that Leftist reference for the First Amendment is highly selective. Certainly the number of times that private property owners have been told they must “bow to community pressure” and not build big-box stores somewhere (including New York City) suggests that they have no basis for whimpering about Muslims “being forced to bow to community pressure” in this instance.
One thing nobody has yet discussed, by the way, is whether a Muslim “community” of any sort actually exists anywhere near the proposed location of this “community center.” The Wall Street area has seen many new residential constructions over the past decade plus, but it hardly seems likely that there is a sufficient Muslim presence in the area (even after the Halal Mafia has driven off the non-Muslim street vendors) to justify a 13-story “community center.” Not even the highly Muslim ghetto of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn has required a “community center” of that size—and, unlike Ground Zero, that is an actual Muslim community.

An objective reality that they can, perhaps, bring themselves to look at is the grossly disproportionate size of a “community center” larger than any other such “community center” in the greater New York metropolitan area—and one which is in no way justified by the size of any extant or adjacent Muslim community.
That being the case, who/what is this “community center” for, since a religious center for a religion with no or virtually no presence in the area would seem absurd…unless, of course, you realize that it is a center for triumphalism, conversion, and conquest.

Citywide, maybe; there are large Muslim enclaves in Bay Ridge and in a couple of Queens neighborhoods as well as in what should now be called Kabul Hill (rather than Cobble Hill). There are certainly not 50,000 Muslims in Lower Manhattan, and there is no neighborhood, out of all the Muslim enclaves, that would support, in the neighborhood itself, a 13-story “community center.”
There is no way on earth that a sectarian “community center” of this size can be justified by an existing community, which was the reason for such initially-sectarian community centers as the 92nd Street Y, to which this project is being falsely compared.
