Correct. Under the Umayyads, alongside the often-suffocating discriminatory measures levied against the jizya-and-kharadj-paying Mozarab dhimmi-serfs (only a step above slavery), the duress felt by the native Ibero-Gothic-Roman-Celtic population was so great that 75% of the population in al-Andalus gave way and reverted to the Islamic deen, thenceforth no longer having to endure fiscal exploitation, demeaning corvees (forced labor), pronounced legal and political inequality, and both minute and egregious daily humiliations and debasements. The rest of the Christian population was actually Arabized (Mozarabs), for some time losing touch with its syncretistic Gothic-Roman-Celtic identity. Then, by the Almoravid and Almohad invasions, the Christians of the regions of Spain and Portugal still under the dawla al-Islamiyyah were massacred, enslaved, forcibly-converted, and deported to North Africa. Regardless of occassional brief period of relative prosperity (despite excessive taxation which over the years served usually to impoverish and debilitate, to basically enslave dhimmis to their Muslim masters) and the existence of a small insecure-so-easily-manipulatable-by-the-Muslim-rulers Christian elite, the life of the Latin Christians in their own land under the Muslim conquerors was nothing short of daily misery, humiliation, and inequity (something which the muwallad ["new convert"] Umar ibn Hafsun readily took advantage of in order to garner the support of the disenfranchised and degraded Mozarabs during his rebellion against Umayyad domination).

This is how Maimonides, in his Iggeret Teiman (Epistle to the Yemenite Jews), described the plight of the Jewish dhimmi in the Dar al-Islam…

“Remember, my coreligionists, that on account of the vast number of our sins God has hurled us into the midst of this people, the Arabs, who have persecuted us severely, and passed baneful and discriminatory legislation against us, as God has forewarned us: Our enemies themselves shall judge us [Deut. 32:31]. Never did a nation molest, degrade, debase, and hate us as much as they. Therefore, when David king of Israel of blessed memory, inspired by the Holy Spirit, envisaged the future tribulations of Israel, he bewailed and lamented their lot only in the kingdom of Ishmael, and prayed on their behalf for their deliverance in the verse: Woe is me, that I live with Meshekh, that I dwell among the clans of Kedar [Ps. 120:5]. Note the distinction between Kedar and the children of Ishmael, for the Madman is of the lineage of the children of Kedar, as they readily admit. Daniel also alludes to our humiliation and degradation like the dust in threshing [2 Kings 13:7], suffered only at the hands of the Arabs, may they be speedily vanquished, when he says: And it made fall to the earth some of the host, yea of the stars, some of which it trampled [Dan. 8:10]. Although we are dishonored by them beyond human endurance, and have to put up with their fabrications, yet we behave like him of whom the prophet said: But I am like a deaf man, unhearing, like a dumb man who cannot speak up [Ps. 38:14]. Similarly, our sages instructed us to bear the prevarications and lies of Ishmael in silence. They found it in a cryptic allusion to this attitude in the names of his sons, Mishma, Dumah, and Massa, which have been interpreted to mean listen, be silent, and endure. We have acquiesced, both young and old, to inure ourselves to humiliation, as Isaiah instructed us: I offered my backs to the floggers, and my cheeks to those who tore out my hair [Isa. 50:6]. All this notwithstanding, we do not escape this continued maltreatment and pressure, which well-nigh crush us. No matter how much we suffer and elect to remain at peace with them, they stir up strife and sedition, as David describes: I am all peace; but when I speak, they are for war [Ps. 120:7]. Most certainly therefore if we start trouble, and claim power from them absurdly and preposterously, we surely give ourselves up to destruction.”

Segregation in living quarters, yielding to a Muslim on a street, walking on the left side of the road (the side of al-Shaytan), giving up one’s seat to a Muslim, being prohibited from riding horses or camels and only permitted to ride a donkey or mule on a saddle of wood or no saddle at all, forced to wear ridiculous discriminatory clothing, paying jizya as protection money (in some cases being slapped in the process) to prevent a resumption of jihad and thus as a sign of kufr and disgrace, forced to pay kharadj in order to live and work on land which is owned by Muslims and cannot be owned by kuffar, required to act in a humble and quavering and meek manner before a Muslim, a ban on self-defense against unprovoked Muslim aggression, no death penalty for the Muslim who kills a dhimmi but the death penalty for a dhimmi who kills a Muslim, a dhimmi is prohibited from holding political office over Muslims, not permitted to own or bear arms, required to house passing Muslims in their houses for three days and entertain and feed them at their (the dhimmis’) own expense, not permitted to hire Muslim servants, kafir houses of worship must not have any symbols of kufr and shirk adorning them externally, kafir houses of worship must not be taller than mosques/masjids, kafir houses must not be taller or more ornate than those of the Muslims, forced to garrison Muslim troops and do the same for them, not permitted to sell books of kufr or shirk or practice kufr or shirk outside kafir houses of worship, not permitted to build new kafir houses of worship, only permitted to repair kafir houses of worship destroyed before the Muslim conquest and in this case not permitted to embelish them, not permitted to express negative opinions or criticism of anything Islam-related, not permitted to criticize Shari’a, must agree with a Muslim and not debate him, must not use Muslim names or teach the Qur’an, must pray in hushed whispers, must not ring church bells, must bury dead in secrecy and haste, must not proselytize shirk or kufr or prevent another kaffir from converting to Islam, must not rally for self-determination beyond the current order of Bantustan-like semi-autonomy combined with crippling discriminatory measures to make Islam prevail over kufr and shirk and demonstrate the meanness and baseness of the kuffar, must obey the orders of any random Muslims if he orders the dhimmi to carry a load etc, must obey their master the Emir when he orders them to engage in menial tasks such as cleaning latrines and salting the heads of decapitated rebels even on Sabbath days,
and the list could go on and on…

But to say that this resembles apartheid is “racist Islamophobic bigotry”, I guess…
