Catholic Priest Abuse Linked to at Least 13 Suicides in Belgium

By: Charles JohnsonReligion • Sep 10, 2010 at 7:40 pm PDT

Ugh. The Catholic Church child abuse scandal in Belgium just keeps getting worse: Priest sex abuse linked to 13 suicides in Belgium.

BRUSSELS – Hundreds of sex abuse victims have come forward in Belgium with harrowing accounts of molestation by Catholic clergy that reportedly led to at least 13 suicides and affected children as young as two, a special commission said Friday.

Professor Peter Adriaenssens, chairman of the commission, said the abuse in Belgium may have been even more rampant than the 200-page report suggests.

“Reality is worse than what we present here today because not everyone shares such things automatically in a first contact with the commission,” he told reporters.

Adriaenssens, a child psychiatrist who has worked with trauma victims for 23 years, said nothing had prepared him for the stories of abuse that blighted the lives of victims.

re: #203 Alsatian

It wasn’t a lie. It was how he felt at the time. And they he changed his mind.

Things like having your words used by extremists and racists will do that to a man.
Like he changed his mind on global warming.

The way I like to see it is that Charles embraced Peace.

Hey, FatAssChuckTheFormerCatholic…if these allegations are true, and no doubt SOME are, the Priests that are proven guilty should be dealt with promptly and severely. We agree on that. However, maybe, just MAYBE, some of these charges are NOT true. But we are talking about Europe, so EVERY.Fucking.Allegation.Must.Be.True. It’s the Catholic Church being accused, so it HAS to be true. Chuck, you dickweed, you give a pass to the goat fuckers that condone stoning for adultery and the like or being gay. I am 100% sure that NOT ONE GOAT FUCKING IMAM has abused a child. Although Moose Limbs are promised virgins and nubile young boys upon martyrdom, they would never molest a boy in the here and now. Wait! They do molest boys and rape women, then STONE THE WOMAN for HER transgression. It doesn’t matter, though, they are camel fuckers and worship a Moon God. My bad. Chuck, you are beneath contempt. If you don’t believe in God, that’s your right. But to denigrate every man that is a priest because of the actions of the few (look the stats up, it’ll do you some good to do your own research for a change) is fucking pitiful. In closing, Cupcake, I’d like to remind you that God will forgive you for being a fucking atheist loser, but I won’t. Have a nice day while your blog shrivels up like your dignity. BTW, your are breathing my air, you pussy.

Didn’t Chawuz beat his (pendulous) breast recently about the feelings of his muzz commenters? Isn’t it odd that he doesn’t feel similarly aggrieved on behalf of his Catholic commenters?

The reason why is when the muzzies are unhappy they break things, where the nominally Catholic inmates like reine ask Chuck for more.

“It feels good, Charles, can you whip me some more? Please call me a pedophile, I like it”.

Hell, no. Chuckypoo hates Catholics, even though I’d guess that he has more than a few Catholic readers. The Catholics will forgive him for being a dumbass. He doesn’t want to piss off the moose limbs because he’s a scared bitch. He says one thing that offends the goat humpers and he’ll have nightmares for a month wondering which night will be the one that the muzzies will give him a haircut down to his shoulders.

Someone should point out to him that Islam, unlike Christianity, sanctions child abuse and child brides and unfortunately, it happens in the Muslim world on a massive scale. Although I doubt he’ll post anything on Islamic child abuse any time soon. It’s bigotry to point it out you see.

I’m pretty sure it’s no coincidence that CJ closed registration shortly before 9/11. Look for it to go wide open again in a few days.

I’m sick of this narrative about Catholic priests. Ask any insurance company— you know, the guys who have to deal with REALITY. Catholic priests are no more likely to hit on minors than Orthodox priests, Protestant ministers, and rabbis. And all of those clergymen are statistically less likely to transgress than public school teachers.

I’d also like to point out that most of the abuse took place during a liberal infection of seminaries, during the heyday of the sexual revolution and celebration of gay rights, etc. It was not the cranky, conservative branch of the Church that was producing these creeps. It was the “enlightened,” left-wing seminaries. (And in the US at least, it was the most liberal dioceses that had the biggest problem.)

Note that about 90% of the abuse was not “pedophilia,” but pederasty, that is, the homosexual seduction of minors past puberty. It would be more accurate to call it the “homosexual priest scandal” than the “pedophilia scandal,” although that wouldn’t be quite fair either— I mean to gays as a whole.

This narrative has really passed into witch-hunt and slander territory. No wonder it appeals to Chuck so much.

Exactly right. I don’t know much about the Catholic church, but I’d bet that this problem, while it probably HAS existed for a long time, got much worse after the liberalization of the priesthood.

Part of the problem, to be sure, is that any position of authority over young people brings with it the risk of those who want to take advantage of that authority to abuse in some way or another, that power.

I’d like to see, though, the percentage of cases of pre-liberalization and post-liberalization pederasty. And I’d like to compare the percentage of Catholic priests before/after liberalization to the percentage of leaders of other youth-oriented roles (teachers, scout masters, Protestant church youth leaders, Big Brothers/Sisters, etc) who are abusing their authority with the percentage of followers of the R.O.P. who support terrorist acts. No, it doesn’t make abuse any less wrong, but it’d be interesting to see in any case.

    Alrighty then!

    Basically, this is what I am seeing in topic Charles has posted;

“Not all muslims are evil, nor should they be held accountable for the miscreants in their religion, but those rules don’t apply to Catholics.”

I recognize that it unfair to put words into another person’s mouth, but this is what I see.

This is one of the facets of hypocrisy that led me to leave littlegreenfootballs. I am not saying that I do not have hypocritical aspects to my life. I am just saying that I found littlegreenfootballs to be uneven in its treatment of several issues…to the point where I no longer wished to participate. I wish them long and happy lives. But I do not see myself posting there any longer.

Charles is defensive of muslims being all lumped together as fanatical morons, and I respect him for that. But if you are going to take the step, you might as well travel the whole mile; Respect for all religions, all minorities, all beliefs, or lack thereof. And that includes the south, mormons, scientologists, fortunetellers, and those who like anchovies. The big boat.

And for those who are against hate, you wouldn’t know it when a certain Sarah Palin is named. I didn’t hear a huge outcry when her church got burned.
