Journey to the Center of the Memory Hole

September 15, 2010

With all the recent talk of LGF “then and now”, burning Korans, “Bigot Brigades”, and scrubbing posts, I just couldn’t resist the urge to come out of retirement.  So, I’ve decided to tie this all together, starting with a trip to the deep, dark forests of The Google, resurrecting a (seemingly)  innocuous front page sentence that was presumably lost forever:

I’m setting up Mr. Shmulevich with an LGF account, and you’ll be able to discuss it with him in person.

Stanislav Shmulevich, as you might remember, is the Pace University kid who decided to piss off his Muslim classmates back in ’07 by tossing a school Koran into a toilet.  Local law enforcement and the university -which is undoubtedly sensitive about their image as a hate-free educational environment- threw the proverbial book at him.  In a tough spot, Mr. Shmulevich hopped on his computer…and called LGF to the rescue (naturally!):

Oh snap!  Something is missing….the last sentence! (the wayback machine missed it on it’s periodic flyby, but luckily the frothing freepers had grabbed the original version as I remember it)

But why scrub that?

Looking to the source recently, explanations for the belated use of the front page eraser have involved instances of misleading statements and/or inaccuracies (however weakly executed).  But this wasn’t the case here.  CJ really did enthusiastically give the beleaguered Koran desecrater a coveted LGF account (“StanS”; still active), and he appeared in the same thread:

Now, I’d like to think that the post-180, enlightened LGF would be embarrassed by all this, and CJ went back and decided to edit out that little detail.  He might have been convinced that today’s lizard hive-mind couldn’t possibly handle the cognitive dissonance resulting from the realization that Bigot Brigadiers were invited into an LGF of not so long ago.  Or at least thought that it wasn’t worth the chance, should someone stumble upon it.

But in reality, I believe that this sentence was deleted not long after it was penned (I can say that it wasn’t there as of Oct. 20 ’07; less than 3 mo. later).  This was a light bulb moment, and CJ figured that if the kid was wacky enough to stick a Koran in a toilet, then he was wacky enough to incriminate himself further on a very public blog.  And while the sure solution would be to just undo it, euthanizing the account would have been deemed too unpopular at the time.  So that leaves hiding it, telling him to shut up, and hoping that the other side doesn’t make the connection between “StanS” and Stanislav.  In other words, the scrubbing was for Shmulevich’s protection.  (shortly after, a pro bono LGF legal defense team sprung into action!)  The question really is how long it took for CJ to realize that he was being a bonehead.

Exit question:  What happened with Stanislav Shmulevich, anyway?

Here’s a prediction: CJ will delete everything before the 2008 election claiming that it is a speed improvement for the site and besides things have changed so much no one would miss those old posts anyway.

It’s actually a pretty straightforward SQL move to make the archives prior to a certain date invisible. I actually don’t think anything other than these minor edits are actually gone, just hidden. Depending on how he did it, even the sentence in question here may just be hidden.

Seems to be some strange dynamics taking place over at the swamp.
There was a time when the wife and I would curl up with the computer, and watch the rolling comments come in during an election night.
It really was a great place to hang out and see the insightful comments being made.
Well….we just went through a major primary, and not a single comment on what was taking place.

And today….the major topic seems to be Nintendo games.

I would like to think that at least someone with half a brain over there is reading the comments here, and at other sites, as well as watching the manipulations that Chuck is doing to the prior comments, and just quietly walking away from there.

After all, it isn’t too hard to realize that the only reason that Chuck has no dissenting posters anymore, is that he bans them and silences their voices on his site.

It’s not really “Gee…Everyone agrees with me”, it’s “If you don’t agree with me, I ban you”.

Perfect example of a self licking ice cream cone.

I LOVE that aspect of his conversion to rabid moonbattery, the idea that he was misled by lying liars who lied to him about, well, everything. Apparently, prior to 9-11, he lived under a mushroom with his website-designing books, and was never exposed to anything regarding Islamic terrorism, the bad craziness of American politics, and the issue of global warming. He was an innocent naif, led by his pudgy hand to the Abysmal Pit Of Ignorance And Bigotry where all conservatives live. He was saved by Obama at the last possible moment, when he was able to reach up and grab ahold of one of the Messiah’s streaming rainbows, and be pulled to safety in the Land Of Koz. The Wizard Of Koz still refuses to see him, or acknowledge his bended-knee supplication in any way, but it’s only a matter of time before he will be given a seat at the table.

Have you noticed that they have fewer and fewer posters?
There’s about a dozen hard core Kos Kidz and a tiny number of older posters who are kissing ass to stay there.
I have noticed that they do get new folks who usually immediately challenge the kool aid drinkers and get banned after a couple of posts.
      Amusing.

You would think that a guy who admits to having been a credulous fool in the past might seriously question his own judgment….or at least not be so hasty to jump onto another ideological bandwagon. To be sure, that would require actual THINKING, as opposed to feeling, i.e., the kind of mature reflection of which CJ is incapable.

As it is, he reminds me of a 13 year old girl who swoons over a boy one week and then, having found him a disappointment or having turned her attention elsewhere, calls him a poopyhead the next week, furiously expunging the boy’s name from the hearts adorning her notebooks.

Hence the frequent pleas for financial support, the stupid cookbook, the retarded calendar, the new subscription deal, open registration, and so forth. I tried to read through a couple of threads the other day, and I just couldn’t hack it. It was like watching Crazy Olbie and Rachel Madcow interview Joy Behar and Rosie O’Donnell. The few old-timers that still hang out there have ingested the Kool-Aid, or they wouldn’t be able to stand it.

    The Blog Warp
—apologies to The Rocky Horror Show and “The Time Warp”

    It’s astounding
    Wild deleting
    Madness takes control
    But just watch closely
    Not for very much longer
As I try to hawk my soul

    I can dismember
    Doing the Blog Warp
    Revising the moments when
    I spoke with honesty
But about which I am testy
Let’s do the Blog Warp again
Let’s do the Blog Warp again

It’s just a lurch to the left
And then a slap at the right
A spare tire on my hips
    Making downdings all night
    With breaches of trust
    That show I’m insa-ay-ay-ay-ane
Let’s do the Blog Warp again
Let’s do the Blog Warp again

    It’s so dreamy
    My fantasies free me
    As the blogosphere
    Looks on appalled
    Stalking those I deleted
    ‘Til I feel so depleted
    By my obsessive
    Internet webcrawls
    My reversals of principal
    I defend with caterwauls
And nothing can ever be the same
    I’ll erase my old postings
    And defend it with boasting
Let’s do the Blog Warp again
Let’s do the Blog Warp again

It’s just a lurch to the left
And then a slap at the right
A spare tire on my hips
    Making downdings all night
    With breaches of trust

I wonder how many suckers will pay the $10 per month. Let’s see, there really are only around (and I think I am being generous) 200 active posters over there. Half of them are twenty somethings with their fingers up their noses and no money (Nintendo! Hah). Of the other half, 50% (or more) won’t do anything because that is how people are. That leaves (maybe) 50 people who will (for now) kick in $10 per month.

Wow, that’s almost as much as I make…. $500 per month.

(oh snap – I mean… that is almost as much as I make in a morning!)

Before, Chunky was pushing something like 30,000 subscribers. If he had grown a brain and come up with something like $1 per month ($12 per year), he would now be hauling down some decent bread. As it is, he will be eating bread.

    re: #231 Obdicut

There’s another thing going around about you giving a membership to somebody who put the Koran in a toilet and then got charged for felonies or something.

I wondered if they’d get around to that one. I definitely did think the person who put a Koran in a toilet should not have been charged with a crime. However, at no time did I ever support the actual act of putting a Koran in a toilet, and in fact when some people tried to get me to sign on to an effort to get a lot of people to put Korans in toilets (idiots), I refused in no uncertain terms and ended up banning one of the most persistent idiots.

I don’t think Terry Jones should have been charged with a crime either, if he had burned a Koran. This isn’t criminal behavior, it’s bigoted hateful behavior.

Obdicut is obviously reading DOD this morning.

All right, sorry to post on a dead thread, but the topic is interesting, to me. I suspect that Chunk may very well be simply archiving the un-PC posts, hiding them. I think it is a play to suck up to ‘powers that be’. I further suspect that once things in America change, and the other side holds the trust of public office, he will jump on the other side again. He is a crass opportunist, albeit an incompetent one. Watch what happens in November, and then in 2012. If he does not buy the farm from all the dope he does and from his apoplectic rage, I think he will try to spin back.

    good catch!

charles is still lying about this:

The wingnuts are really trying hard to put out the meme that I’ve been doing wholesale editing of my old LGF posts. It’s all over the place today.

I haven’t, of course. This is all based on deleting TWO WORDS from one post.

i think it’s pretty clear that he assumes that he has his cult members scared enough of his referrer log that they wouldn’t dare leave to check the veracity of the stuff he says. i wonder how many have left in the last few days.

another good quote from charles’ past:

Imagine, if you will, the reaction among LGF’s admirers on the left if I started deleting topics and comments wholesale
