(Sorta) Lost to Memory Hole: “Zombie: The Weather Underground’s Long Term Plan”

October 3, 2010

As we move forward with our LGF memory hole series, we should probably highlight a few failures of ChenZhen’s recovery process.  As our first example, here is another thread that is no longer visible (a big one):

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/31775_Zombie-_The_Weather_Undergrounds_Long_Term_Plan

Trace evidence of the thread’s existence can be found everywhere. Heck, it’s still on digg and memeorandum, and the url shows up on various other sites.  And an rss feed captured what appears to be the full content of the thread here:

With help from LGF readers ‘experiencedtraveler’ and ‘Sharmuta,’ Zombie has dug up another rare document: the first issue of Osawatomie: the Weather Underground newspaper.

And it outlines a strategy of “working from the inside” to radicalize America and bring about a socialist revolution.

If that sounds familiar, I’m sure it’s just a coincidence. Or your imagination. Or maybe you’re a racist.

…

For a screengrab of the thread, however, we came up empty. Google? nope. Archive.org? nuthin’

LGF’s own google search revealed it was once there:

And this is what memeorandum looked like:

But, after exhausting all known resources, I have nothing to offer to the mosaic on this one. Or do I?

During this excavation, I happened to remember that I had featured Zombie on my site before, and on this topic specifically. So, I went back, checked my thread from two years ago, and got lucky. Well, kinda lucky:

Yes, that is the url for the first comment in that thread, and you can enjoy the slide show.   I found it because I had just so happened to have linked to this choice nugget:

I haven’t gone through them all, so I don’t know how many comments there are in total. But they’re there.   So…comments rescued, but thread lost.

Had Obama not been black, the Wally would not have changed his political views.

      Why, possum?

He was trolling and baiting people with anti-Semitic remarks and disrupting the blog. The admins reluctantly decided to ban him.

I can’t read the blog very often any more–just too darn busy, so I was surprised to see this about Possum–why!?

Did he erase the thread because he wrote that as late as Nov 2008…and would all too soon be accusing his commenters of imagination and racism?
Or was it because it featured the now-designated-as-wicked zombie?
    Amazing.

I’m not sure, ’cause most other Zombie threads remain (there are a couple others that are deleted, but Zombie was featured many, many times on LGF in the past).

I guess we could answer that question better if we could come up with examples of other threads (not just comments but entire threads) that were deleted because they involved a person who would later be a victim of the LGF schism. If there really aren’t any, then I think we can safely say that Chuck’s sarcasm about racism cuts a little too close to the bone today.

A certain group of people were trolling Possum first. This is not the blog to discuss it, either.
