Why We Do This

November 7, 2010

Every once and awhile, fellow netizens will ask me something along the lines of “Chen, why do you still care?  You were banned years ago.  Let it go already!”.  And until today, I didn’t quite know how to respond.

As a netizen, I’ve evolved somewhat, and I think that I’ve finally realized my purpose.  I am a kung fu master, and my instinct tells me that I must use my powers for good.  And with your help, I believe that we can take down the little green nuthouse.  There are still innocent people in there!

It will take more work, but this is a blog war we can win.  We have the numbers and the talent, and thanks to CJ’s voluminous archive, we have plenty of ammunition.

For example, I stumbled upon tonight’s howler during my recent ”hat tip” research:

Icarus’ Law:  Whatever CJ says, the opposite must be true.

As we’ve documented, we were able to recover nine (or about half) of the Fjordman threads in question from the memory hole, so obviously Charles changed his mind at some point*.  But why?   What would cause him to backtrack on such a principled stance?

My guess?  There was a light bulb moment, and CJ realized that the “smear” wasn’t the threads themselves, but the fact that it wasn’t until a few years, 18 dedicated Fjordman threads and an additional 17 “hat tips” passed for him to finally ”see clearly what he’s promoting”.    In this context, simply admitting you were wrong doesn’t do much to deflect the blow.  So, into the memory hole they went.   But much to CJ’s chagrin, we can now hit him for his stupendous gullibility, for trying to hide the threads, and for the “aversion to revisionism” bullshit.

I really hope that this is sinking in for the lizard lurkers.  The Lizardoid has no clothes.

Everybody was kung-fu fighting – fast as lightning!

What happened at LGF is very revealing – human psyche students will study it in years to come – what can happen in an amorphous online format, and how people feel fear, and how they stand by and let friends be attacked – how they value their “belonging” more than doing the right thing – it’s all very fascinating.

    Love ya Chen!

Is there a quote for Charles’ “I was duped” excuse? I only ever heard it second-hand. Maybe it’s apocryphal? Saying you’re wrong is one thing. Saying you were duped is something else entirely – you’re already in cover your ass mode, from which it’s just a small step to cover your tracks mode. That – if he ever claimed he “was duped” – is probably as close to him admitting he lost his aversion to revisionism as you’ll ever get.

He sure was a gullible charmingly naive guy, judging from all the hat tips he’d like to forget:

No, it’s not apocryphal. He has said he was duped, specifically in regard to AGW. The diabolically clever agents of Big Oil deceived him. He has also implicitly claimed to have been duped by Robert Spencer and Co. I remember these things well from quotes published here or at the Blogmocracy — I haven’t visited LGF itself since the spring of 2009.

Assuming my memory is correct — and I’ll grant that it may not be as good as I think it is! — CJ has used the “I was duped” excuse more in the last year or so than previously. In June 2008 he could just say he was wrong about Fjordman, but as he has one by one rejected every position he previously took, I hardly think he could keep that up. How could a man be “wrong” about so very many things?!?

You do it because it’s fun and he deserves it. He didn’t ban a few commenters for egregious excesses. He changed the rules and banned just under 2000 who spent several years feeding him the research, news tips and cash that made his site nominally respectable.
    Fire for effect!!!

That’s the essence! And,,, for the side effects – Perl, Python, RegExp, Google Sites, Google App Engine, GIFs, etc. Charles is just the rabbit – a very good one, but just the rabbit; and CZ’s sentiments notwithstanding, no one still there is worth saving.

I make a living out of stealing underpants. :)

Oh BTW I am stealing some more dirty laundry as we speak.

        Charles is clueless…. :)

Much of what CJ puts up is self-referential, and if you click on the few outside links, there is usually an entirely different story from the one he posts. Trouble is, his fanbase doesn’t read past the link, unless it’s from the HuffPo or MediaMattress.

Johnny Dollar has an excellent takedown of Rachel Madcow’s phony “journalism” over the Olbermann thang. Like Chuck, she reports pretty much what Media Matters tells her to, and not a whole lot more. Wish I knew how to link.
